IN THE WAIRARAPA.
LESS WHEAT SOWN. Only a comparatively small area of wheat has been sown in the Wairarapa this year —in fact the quantity put in is becoming less every season, the average farmer not caring to take the risk of a poor crop and a small return, or no return at ail. The experience of many Wairarapa farmers is that over a period of years the growing of wheat is a payable proposition. Unfortunately, after experiencing perhaps only a moderate season for the first year or two, many farmers in Wairarapa gave up growing wheat. A substantial area has been put down in oats this season, though the replacing of the horse by the motor is resulting in less of this crop being cultivated than was the case before the war. Maize is being sown in increasing quantities because of its value to the dairy farmer as cow fodder.
