Alleged Horse-stealing.

From information recened from the constable at Carterton, Constable Culliiiane yesterday morning arrested a young man named Joe Bateman, a blacksmith by trade, on suspicion of having stolen a mare belonging to Mr Alfred Allen, of Tarat&hi, Wairarapa. The circumstances of the case are these. Bateman, who was hard up, had been employed for a few days by Mr Allen, and left early on the morning of the 29th August. The same morning the horse was missed from the stable, and

on a search being instituted the animal was traced going in the direction of Masterton. Bateman bad stated on the evening previous to leaving that be intended going through the F’ortyMile Bush to New Plymouth, and Mr Allen at once suspected that he had taken tho horse. The matter was put in the hands of the police, with the result that Bateman is now in custody in l’ahiatua. Accused was arrested by Constable Cullinaue whilst at work in Mr Naylor's smithy, where lie had obtained a few days employment to help hint on the road. He admitted having taken the horse and bridle, feeling quite unable to undertake the journey through the bush oil foot, but states be bad no other intention than that of riding. When lie reached the M&ngamalioe lie turned tlie animal loose, throwing the bridle on the side of the road, and then came on to Pahiatua. Bateman sa\s it was his intention after reaching New Plymouth, where he has friends, to send Mr Allen £4 for having caused him so much trouble. Accused was brought before Mr Davie, J.P., this morning and remanded, pending further instructions from Mr Allen.
