CANVASTOWN.
(From our Own Correspondent.) WELCOME HOME.
Thursday 7-3-18. A successful social evening to welcome home 2nd Lieutenant H. E. Stratford and Private A. Simpson was held in Victoria Hall on Saturday evening. There was a large gathering of local residents and a number of visitors. The president of the local Patriotic Society, Mr E. F. Healy, presided, and on behalf of those present extended a hearty welcome to the returned soldiers. Unfortunately, Private Simpson, who is absent from the district, was unable to attend. The musical part of the programme was contributed to by Mesdames Forrest, Field, Mcßay, Caldwell, the Misses Myra Rush and Doris Bates, and, Mr Caldwell. Recitations were given by Miss Eileen Morrison, Miss Healy, and Mr Holland, and a monologue by Mr Treacher.
At the conclusion of the musical programme, Mr Healy, on behalf of the residents of Canvastown, presented Lieutenant Stratford with a handsome gold medal, suitably inscribed. A similar token of appreciation to Private Simpson was also accepted by Lieutenant Stratford, who, in a neat speech on behalf of Private Simpson and himself, thanked those present for the cordial welcome they had given them. After supper had been handed round the hall was cleared for dancing, which was kept going till mid-night. RED TRIANGLE DAY. The Patriotic Society have arrangements well in hand for Red Triangle Day, to be held on the 16th March. No effort is being spared to make the day a success. Donations of cash, produce, stock, etc., are coming in freely. Given a fine day the local contribution to the Y.M.C.A. funds should be a substantial one.
