i FIERCE FIGHT. Tripoli, Jan. 20. There was a fierce all-day battle on Thursday. The Turks attacked the Italians, who were erecting two forts at Gargaress. The Italians repulsed them, but were themselves compelled to withdraw at nightfall, the defences not being complete. The casualties of the Italians numbered 50, and the Turkish loss is reported to be heavy. UNEQUAL FIGHT AT BENGHAZI Tripoli, Jan. 21. Eighteen infantrymen in a blockhouse of Benghazi, supported by neighbouring redoubts, repulsed 400 Turks and Arabs, killing 29. INTERFERENCE WITH FRENCH SHIPPING. Paris, Jan. 19, An Italian officer boarded the French steamer Carthage, bound for Tunis, and ordered the captain immediately to destroy Duval’s aeroplane. The captain refused, and the Italians then demanded the Tripolitan mail bag. This was also refused, and thereupon the Carthage was seized. The company had authorised the captain to land the aeroplane. The Italians also seized the French mail steamer Manouba, bound for Tunis, and have taken her to Gagliari. The steamer Schleiswig, which was accompanying the Manouba, was merely searched and then released. BRITISH SHIP HELD UP. Aden, Jan. 21. The Italian cruiser overhauled the British ship Africa and removed 12 Turkish officers who ware on board, including Riza Bey, the famous Yemen veteran. TURKISH PASSENGERS FORCED TO ' LAND. Paris, Jan. 21. The captain of the Manouba declined to surrender 29 Turkish passengers who said they were Red Cross doctors and nurses. The Italians claim that they are Turkish officers and soldiers. The Manouba was released after the Turks bad been forced to disembark. RELEASE OP THE CARTHAGE. Rome, Jan. 21. M. Legrand states that in a cordial interview he assured Signor San Ginliano that the aviators had undertaken not to place their aeroplanes at the service of the belligerents, and Signor San Giuliano ordered ihe Carthage’s release.
