Waterside Workers’ Demands.

THE SYDNEY WHARF LABOURERS Sydney, Jan. 20. It is stated that a conference between the interestate steamship owners and the wharf labourers’ delegates has been rendered futile, the men insisting on the demand for Is 6d an hour ordinary time and 2s 8d an hour overtime, and the employers offering Is 5d and 2s l£d. The delegates undertook to submit the offer to a mass meeting for Tuesday, and confer with the owners again on Wednesday. Jan. 21. There is no change in regard to the wharf labourers’ trouble. The steamer Electra is still held up. Though it is pointed out that her cargo was loaded by a crew, all of whom are Unionists, the wharf labourers refuse to unload her. The secretary of the Union states that be sees no reason why they should not unload the vessel.

LYTTELTON WATERSIDE 1 WORKERS Christchurch, Last Night. In connection with the agreement arrived at between the waterside workers and the ship owners regarding increased rates of pay, etc., there appears to be some dissatisfaction among the members of the Lyttelton Casual Wharf Labourers’ Union. This morning a number of men approached the president of the Union, and said that they thought that some steps should be taken in the direction of obtaining increased wages. After some discussion it was arranged that a meeting of the committee of the Union should be held to-morrow morning to review the whole position, and to formulate demands for increased pay. The result of the deliberation will be brought before the general meeting of the Union on Monday. At present the Railway Union men who handle cargo in railway trucks receive Is 3d an hour ordinary time, and 2s overtime. The waterside workers have received a general increase of 2d an hour, and the railway men intend moving for a similar inclose. Alleged Illegal Operation Timaru, Last Night Patrick Joseph Coman was to-day committed for trial on a charge of performing an illegal operation. The case bad been frequently adjourned owing to the illness of the young woman concerned. Accused is a young Australian and married. His wife and children came over, but have been helped back again.
