THE TOWN HALL DOORS

TO THE EDITOB, SIR, —Owing to absence I have not had an opportunity of replying to Mr W. H. Smith’s letter re tho front doors of the Town Hall. Mr Smith, as usual, wanders away from the point at issue—namely, that tho doors as at present constructed will probably form a death-trap in case of lire. Mr Smith says the door-space of the two front doors is greater than the door-space of the old doors, which opened outwards. Probably it is; but that is no argument in favour of angle-doors. And to cite tho window and stage exits is absurd. How are women to get out ill rough high windows? Is it the custom, in a panic, for all the men to quietly file out after helping tho ladies through tho windows, or allowing them to precede them to the doors ? If Mr Smith knew anything about public buildings in other parts of the colony, or tho awful stampede that occurs at the cry of fire, he would not ho so ready to defend what 'most people in the town condemn. To advocate that two doors round a corner are better means of exit than one double-door opening outwards is illogical to \ N.A.F.F.
