FIRE AT MELBOURNE
Melbourne, January 18,
A fire at Bleisby Company's (ironmongers) large five storey building gutted the third and fourth stories. The stocks were very heavy, and included large quantities of fireworks and cartridges, which added to the danger but caused a splendid pyrotechnic display. There was a continuous discharge of cartridges, but luckily no one was injured. Firemen succeeded in preventing the fire spreading to the store containing gunpowder and explosive oil. The damage is not stated, but besides the gutted floors the stocks on the others suffered severely by water and smoke. The building was valued at £15,000 and the stock at £22,000. The insurances amount to £'22,000. PLAGUE IN SYDNEY. Sydney, January 19. The health authorities to-night report that a man named Vandy was removed to the Coast Hospital on the 14th inst. suffering from plague. The case is a severe one, but the; putient is improving. It is explained tint the matter was kept quiet until the disease had been fully diagnosed. The man resided in the vicinity of the Haymarket, where the last two patients are supposed to have caught infection.
