LAST NIGHT’S WIRES.

, ■„ [Per United Press Association.] Auckland, Feb. 9. Mr. W. S. Pulford is progressing favorably under the scalp wound sustained yesterday at Professor Payne’s private exhibition of shooting. Dr, Richardson states that he does not apprehend any serious results unless erysipalas should set in. The Devonport Naval Artillery have now reached a minimum strength to enable their services to be accepted. At an interview which the Waikato Times' correspondent had with Rewi at Kihikihi, Rewi stated his reason for going over to Tawhiao was that by so doing he might be successful in gaining over the King and his party to his views; also, that he thus prevented violence to the surveyors and quarrelling among the Natives. He desires to see the work of survey proceed, and he is afraid that any marked leaning to the pakehas would give offence to the Natives. Two of the yearlings that were passed in at the New Zealand Stud Company’s sale at Sydney recently were afterwards sold privately. These were Musket-Bergere colt, who brought 200 guineas, and Musket-Reali-sation, who found a purchaserat 100 guineas. The latter fell sick during the voyage. The Hon. James White forwarded by the Waihora the mare Lady Vivian, a daughter of Stratcouan, for the purpose of her paying a visit to Musket. At a meeting of the Board of Education, the chairman said the Board was now overdrawn £4,000. A finance committee was appointed to investigate the financial position and report to the Board. Mr. Swanson has declared his determination to resign his seat for Newton immediately after next session. Mr. Peacock, the present member for City North, and Mr. Upton, stationer, have already announced their intention to stand for the seat whenever a vacancy arises. Christchurch, Feb. 9. The match between the Tasmanian and the Canterbury teams was continued yesterday, and the Tasmanians having closed their first innings for 226, the Canterbury team went in for their fiist innings. When stumps were drawn for the day they had lost 8 wickets for 169 runs. The match was resumed to-day, when the Canterbury team’s first innings closed for 207. In the Tasmanian’s second innings they have (at 3 p.m.) lost 3 wickets for 10 runs. Ashburton, Feb. 9. The harvest prospects are encouraging. Many farmers are cutting throughout the country. The weather is glorious, and the prospects of an enormous return are daily improving. Timaru, Feb. 1.
