(own correspondent.) Auckland, Friday. The quarantined circus animals have left for Sydney. Mr Stevenson, manager of the Union Insurance Company, died yesterday of consumption. 1 he South British Insurance Company have received cable advices that
their losses by the storm in the Bay of Bengal amount to /i 6,000. Dunedin, Friday.
An information is about to be laid against Stephen Hutchinson for alleged tampering with a grand juror. Albert Irwin, aged 14, died yesterday through falling from a tree at Woodlaugh. The criminal sessions were concluded to-day. Maria Scanlan, for larceny and housebreaking (two indictments), was sentenced to two years on each indictment, the sentences to run concurrently. Edward Hughes, aged 12, for housebreaking, received 3 years. At the inquest on Georgina Butler a verdict that she was wilfully murdered by some person or persons unknown was returned. Wellington, Friday. By the fire at the Gear Meat Co.’s works at Petone, the boiling-down shed, engine shed, bone shed, and part of the piggery, were completely destroyed. It is supposed to be the work of an incendiary. The total insurances on their property is /6070. The following are the insurances on buildings, plant, &c., destroyed :—Victoria, Z 335 ; South British, /"Soo ; Colonial, 1,200 (about /800) ; National, £973. The Governor has appointed the 15th inst. for the first election of members of District Boards of Administration, under section 7 of the Hospitals and Charitable Aid Act. Napier, Friday. Two swaggers, camping in an empty hut near Waipawa, had a narrow escape with their lives through the hut catching fire. They were badly burned, and are now in the hospital. A boy nine years old, named McKenzie was sentenced to be birched and kept in the reformatory until 15 years old for placing a rail on the railway line, saying he did it for a lark. The rail was knocked off by the first train, and he again replaced it, packing it up with a stone.
