SWING FROM GOVERNMENT
HURSTVILLE SEAT POLLING LABOUR WIN LIKELY (Reed. March 20, noon.) SYDNEY, March 20. The final result of the first preference count in the by-election for the Hurstville seat in the Australian Parliament indicates a victory for the Hefl'ron Labour group candidate, Mr. Clive Evatt, K.C., and shows a distinct swing away from the Government. The result of the first preference count is as follows: — 'Dr. Thomas (U.A.P.) .. .. 7552 C. C. Evatt (Heffron Labour) 68G3 Alderman McGrath (Lang Lab.) 5575 It is expected that Mr. Evatt will secure sufficient of Alderman McGrath's second preference votes tc elect him. At the last general election the United Australia Parly candidate, the late Dr. Webb, polled 11,493 votes against his Labour opponents' 8982. The Premier of New South Wales, Mr. B. S. B. Stevens said in an interview that it seemed beyond doubt that the distribution of preferences would give Mr. Evatt a substantial majority.
