DEATH AT SEVENTY-NINE

SIR HENRY LUNN

The death has occurred of Sir Henry Lunn, missionary and travel organiser. He was 79 years of age.

Henry Simpson Lunn was born at Horncastle, Lincolnshire, in July, 1859. Before he was 20 he decided to enter the Methodist ministry and after theological studies at Headingley College he went to Dublin University, taking both the M.A. and M.D. degrees. His heart was set on medical missionary work and in 1887 he was sent out to Madras. His stay in India was short, as his health broke down. He worked for some time as assistant to the Rev. Hugh Price mignes and as a journalist.

Evolving the idea of a union of the Churches, he founded in 1891 "The Review of the Churches." Later he organised the Grindclwald Conferences on Church union of 1892-to 189 C, and ultimately those at Murren in 1923 and later. Without relaxing his enthusiasm for a union of tnc Churches he started a tourist agency. He owned a number of hotels in Switzerland. He was knighted in 1910.

One of Sir Henry's ventures was a series of cruises in the Mediterranean and he founded the Hellenic Travellers' Club. In 192 G, when in the United States, he said he had set aside half of his fortune to be employed "to bring the churches into line to form a united front to outlaw war." He twice stood for Parliament as a Liberal. He- formed -the Strat-ford-on-Avon Preservation Committee, and in 192 G toured the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand in support of the League of Nations Union. He visited Auckland in April of that year. In July, 1937, Sir Henry and his wife celebrated their golden wedding.
