BRILLIANT RUN

MISS.LUMLEY'S 100YDS

WORLD RECORD EQUALLED

MISS NORMAN BEATEN

VISITOR'S SUCCESSES

(P(tr Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day

A performance equalling the world's record for women athletes over 100yds. was registered by Miss Doreen Lumley, on Saturday afternoon when the Auckland provincial junior and women's amateur athletic championships were decided at Carlaw Park.

In clocking Usee, Miss Lumley defeated the Australian Empire Games winner and record-holder for the distance, Miss Decima Norman, ,by only nine inches. The latter had the advantage in the early stages of the contest, but over the last 40 yards, Miss Lumley just managed to gain the lead after an epic struggle. There was no wind at the time of the event and there is no doubt that the performance of Miss Lumley will be recognised. Miss Norman was competing in the broad jump championship when the 100yds. event was due to start and the fact that she left the former to run may have affected her performance in the sprint. Miss Norman's Victories

Miss Norman was outstanding in the broad jump and the 220yds. events, which she won. In the broad jump she registered 17ft. 10* in., a distance that is lOJin. better than the New Zealand standard and lft 4in. better than that recorded by Miss M. Grindrod who was second.

Running with a short stride and a noticeably forward body lean, Miss Norman won the 220yds. championship in the good time for the track of 20 2-ssec. This is 3-ssec. better than the New Zealand standard. Miss Lumley had to be content with second place. There was little between the pair over the first 100 yards, but after that Miss Norman held an advantage which Miss Lumley was unable to challenge and she crossed the line second two feet away.

Application will be made by the Auckland centre for 11 performances to be recognised as records. At present there are no records established for women or junior events in the Auckland province. The events and times for which application will be made are:— High jump, junior.—W. M. Smeeton sft. 7in.
