TORN AND CRUMPLED

WINNING LOTTERY TICKET NEARLY SOLD FOR 3/The tale of a winning double at the races, of an art union ticket signed with the names of the horses, and of an occasion when the ticket was nearly sold for 3s was told by the two winners of the “Pleasant Surprise” art union. The winners of the £2OOO are two Maori brothers, Messrs. Jack and Fuller Conroy, of Rangiuru, near Te Puke. The ticket was purchased at the sons’ request by the father while on a visit to Hamilton, and thus happened to have an Auckland butt.

Twice, in Rotorua, it was mislaid and nearly lost, once it was nearly sold for 3s to tide over a temporary embarrassment. The ticket showed ample evidence of its vicissitudes. It was crumpled and soiled, one corner was missing, but the all-precious number was still clear.

The two brothers, both in their early twenties, have been working at drainage contracts in the Maketu district for some weeks.
