BREEDING FROGS
THE EDIBLE VARIETY
IM PORT AT lON BA N N EI)
The breeding of edible frogs on a large scale in the Christchurch district is not likely to be carried out. Authority will not be given for the importation of live frogs to begin the farm which a city resident proposed to establish.
An application to the Departments of Industries and Commerce and Internal Affairs last June for permission to import frogs was refused. Another Letter .from the applicant was sent forward to itlhe Department of Industies and Commerce by the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce and a similar reply was received by the chamber at ills latest meeting. Refusal to admit the frogs to the Dominion is based on the risk of them becoming a serious pest. The grounds for the original refusal of the application were given again in the department’s letter received last evening.
“These frogs are prolific breeders and might easily become a serious pest, stated the letter. “The Dominion has had experience in the past of the illconsidered importation of animals and insects.”
