DOG STARTS CAR
SURPRISE FOR OWNER
VEHICLE LEAVES GARAGE
Motorists are sometimes responsible for the accidents that occur to their cars, but it is rarely that a dog as the sole occupant of a car can be blamed for a mishap. This was the case at Hawera, however, and the dog provided a few exciting moments for his master.
The engine of the car was being warmed up in the garage. Both doors of the car were, open and the dog came enthusiastically when called to take up his usual position before his master and mistress took their places. The dog chose, however, to bound into the car and lie down violently on the floor. In doing so he put his weight against the gear lever and clutch, and without warning the car moved backward.
Caught unawares, the owner could not jump clear in time, and as his car reversed through the garage door it ripped holes in his trousers below th? knee and tore the flesh. His wife escaped injury. The open doors of the car were damaged as they struck the garage doorposts. The car proceeded leisurely backward. and \the owner, recovering rapidly from his shock, managed to overtake it.
