DEFENCE OF AUSTRALIA
FORCE OF 70,000 NEEDED OPINION OF ANZAC (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. Once a member of MajorGeneral Sir Alexander Russell's staff on Gallipoli. Brigadier P. M. McFar•;..ne. C.8.E., of the Australian Staff Corps, arrived to-day by the Narkti'iida. He is now commandant in Western Australia. Brigadier McFarlanc, who was on a health cruise, was not. prepared to discuss Australia's defence preparations. He said that a total force of 70,000 was required, and was confident that Western Australia would find its quota. "When I left recruiting was in full swing," he said.
Fremantle, Brigadier McFarlanc added, was regarded as one of the best defended ports iti the Empire.
