“EXPECTED TO DIE”
SCHUSCHNIGG’S MARRIAGE ROME, July 14. The Osservatore Romano, the semiofficial organ of the Vatican, commenting on early Nazi denials of the marriage by proxy of Dr. von Schuschnigg, the former Chancellor of Austria, to Countess Vera Fugger von Babenhausen, and to yesterday’s official admission that it took place, says:“The marriage took place after the ecclesiastical authorities had intervened to clarify and regularise Dr. von Schuschnigg’s preceding matrimonial position. “Although Dr. von Schuschnigg was unable to be present, the marriage was entirely in order. It took place at the request of Dr. von Schuschnigg, who was anxious that his son, by a former marriage, should have a mother. Dr. von Schuschnigg believed that he was destined to die. He had had no delusions about his fate since the first day of his arrest.”
