WATERFRONT DELAY
UNLOADING NUISANCE ANHALT’S SULPHUR CARLO When the North German Lloyd steamer Anhalt was at Auckland unloading sulphur the nuisance of dust caused waterside workers to request that the hatch covers be left off, so that rain would settle the dust. This was done, with the result that the sulphur cargo became damp on top in places. The vessel .arrived at New Plymouth last Friday and when waterside workers began unloading they complained of the odour rising from the sulphur and demanded an extra payment of Is (id an hour. The employers would not agree and the consequence was that no work was done on the ship until Saturday morning. The greater part of the working time until then was wet, so that little work would have been possible. The matter was handled by the disputes committee. The workers reduced their claim to an extra shilling, which the employers would not pay. Work started at ft o’clock on Saturday morning and at 10 a.m. the workers accepted the employers' offer of an extra sixpence an hour.
