FAT CATTLE AND SHEEP AUDI NG TON M A LICET (Per Presß Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Entries at the “National” fat stock market yesterday were unusually small for a double sale, and as a result there was the sharpest advance of the year for 'both fat cattle and fat sheep. Eighteen spring lambs were forward and sold at about Is 2d per lb. Store sheep comprised a skeleton entry of old ewes, which sold at low prices. Less than 5000 fat sheep were penned, tire quality being excellent The sale showed a jump from the outset of from 4s to 6s a head for ail quality sheep, and medium ewes, which slumped ba'bly last week, and light ewes and wethers, recovered last week’s drop of 3s, but in the final stages of the sale there was a general easing of Is to Is 6d a head for best sheep. Show wethers from Taihape sold at up to 525; good prime heavy wethers, 32s 6d to 40s; inferior down to 21s. The best ewes made from 23s to 275, tops to 355, medium prime 18s to 21s, light down to 11s. There was a fine display of beef in the 570 head of fat cattle penned. An improvement of from 40s to 45s a head was recorded on last week’s rates, and a good deal of the best beef made close on this price per 1001 b. Although some of the show cattle sold at about £3 per 1001 b., this price was paid for advertising purposes and was beyond the commercial value. The best show bullocks made from £25 to £3O; best show steers, £l9 to £24; good prime bullocks £l7 to £2O 10s, prime £l4 to £l6 10s, light down to £10; show heifers to £2O 10s, good prime £ll 10s to £l4 2s 6d, medium £9 to £lO 10s, light down to £7; show cows to £ls 17s 6d, good £9' to £ll 10s, light down to £O. STORE SHEEP IMPROVE PRICES SLIGHTLY UP STORTFORD LODGE (Iter Tress Association.) HASTINGS, this day. In spite of an improvement in the weather, buyers at the Stortford Lodge stock sale yesterday were scarce. The quality of all the lines offering was not so good as at previous sales, but prices, based on quality, were on a with previous markets. 1 From the outset bidding was spiritless and vendors’ ideas of prices were different from those of buyers. In all lines the yardings were small, the figures being 150 head of cattle, 2000 store sheep and 1000 fat Sheep. The store cattle offering was also very light, there being about half a dozen pens offering. A feature of the sale was the continued improvement and keener competition for store sheep and a brighter sale for quality lines of fat sheep. Mr. G. Heaps, Opapa, scooped the pool in the cattle section by selling the top lines in ox beef and cow and heifer beef. The best lines were £l3 7s for a very heavy framed bullock. A solidly finished heifer realised £ll 10s, and £9 was the price paid for a well finished beast in the cow section. The best prices for store sheep showed a slight rise over last week’s rates. Five-year-old ewes, in good order and showing well up in lamb, sold to 26s 3d. Hoggets sold moderately well, well-woolled realising up to 19s 7d. Good quality was more in evidence in the fat sheep section. Ewaj made to 19s 6d, fat wethers to 24s 4d, and lambs to 13s.
