WOMAN’S OUTBURST
MR.SAVAGE INTERRUPTED INCIDENT IN FAIR LI E A dramatic interruption of the Prime Minister's reply to his welcome in Fairlie was caused by a woman who, mounting the stage, made an outburst, and refused to be pacified. She was still talking volubly when the official party left the stage, but later joined it at afternoon tea, after which she made an apology to the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage. Demanding to be heard by the Prime Minister, the woman came from the body of the hall and, brushing aside attempts to keep her from interrupting Mr. Savage, hurried from the wings to the front of the stage. In excited tones she stated her grievance which, however, was unintelligible even to those seated in the front row. "You won't listen to people," she declared. “We are asking for a new house and we can pay the interest, whatever it costs.” “Now, lady, you are not going to inflict anything on me that I am not here to listen to," said Mr. Savage. "Put your ease on paper and I will listen to you." The Woman: I know what will happen. It, will go into a waste-paper basket. All we get is 10s for looking after the Post Office. The audience began to boo the interrupter, and she was still protesting when the Prime Minister left the stage. Expressing her determination to speak to him, she endeavoured to enter the supper room. The Hon. P. C. Webb blocked her way, and after chatting to her invited her to have tea. She later met Mr. Savage. "I am sorry for what happened, but 1 was upset,” she explained. “1 1 do what you suggest and giv« you tlie position in writing.”
