LABOUR'S CAMPAIGN
BAY OF PLENTY SEAT
ORGANISEK APPOINTED
The Labour Party's campaign to retain the Bay of Plenty seat, now held iby Mr. A. G. Hultquist, was advanced a further stage this week by the appointment of Mr. G. R. A. Whiting as organiser for the East Coast and Poverty Bay portions of the electorate.
Commencing immediately, Mr. Whiting is to give his whole-time services voluntarily up to the date of the general elections, and will carry out the major portion of his organising work in the Waiapu, Uawa and Waikohu counties.
Well known and widely respected, Mr. Whiting has had an association with the Labour Party extending over a number of years. In 1911 he was the official candidate of the party for the Christchurch South seat, and when the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act first came into operation, Mr. Whiting was appointed to the Canterbury Board of Conciliation, and held the position until the boards were abolished and conciliation commissioners appointed. lie was a member of the Spreydon Borough Council for a number of years, and Mayor of Spreydon for two terms. In 1915 Mr. Whiting entered the New Zealand Government service and was appointed inspector of factories and of footwear, a position he held until 1930, when he retired. At the 1931 general elections he was chairman of the committee of Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., and organiser for the Gisborne electorate. "Recognised as an organiser of exceptional ability, Mr. Whiting's contribution to the Bay of Plenty campaign is expected to assist substantially in securing the return of the present member, Mr. A. G. Hultquist," states Mr. T. G. Johnson, secretarytreasurer of the campaign committee for the electorate.
