TOWN CLOCK CHIMES
CHURCH TIME STOPPAGE PROPOSAL CONSIDERED The interference of the town clock chimes with services in the Salvation Army Citadel has prompted the divisional commander, Wellington, to write to the Gisborne Borough Council asking that the chimes be stopped between 10.45 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. and from 0.45 p.m. and 8.15 p.m. "I know that a number of people say they have now become quite used to' it, and do not notice it," the writer added, "but this statement actually is not borne out by the attitude of the people in the meetings when the clock strikes." The Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., said that the chimes could be stopped, but it would be necessary to stop the clock for 12 hours in order to instal a time switch. It would be expensive for the council to do it. On the Mayor's motion, it was decided to hold the matter over until the next meeting.
