FLOODED SECTIONS
TE HAPARA COMPLAINTS ONE VIEWED FAVOURABLY NO RELIEF FOR OTHER "This man has a real kick," stated the Mayor, Mi-. D. W. Coleman, M.P., at last night's meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council, when a letter was received from Mr. S. Williams complaining that, as a result of a drain being dug in Grafton road, stormwater from that street was discharging on to Ins property. The Mayo;- said that for many years there had been a drain that had carried water off through private property, and it had since been blocked up by people who had gone to live there. It was a matter that could be dealt with under the stormwater drainage loan. The. matter was referred to the works committee, and the borough engineer, Mr. E. R. Thomas, was instructed to submit a report. Mr. C. J. Morris drew attention to .he flooding of a section in Cook street. "After every heavy rainfall the water floods the whole section right up to and round the house," Mr. Morris added. The 'Mayor said that this case was different from the former one. Some neighbouring residents had banked up their sections and aggravated the posi tion of others. Cr. F. Tolerton said that one of the neighbouring residents had refuted the suggestion that he had banked up his section, which, the resident claimed, was high when he bought it. Cr. J. H. Hall said that sections in that area were purchased at a cheao price because they were low-lying It was decided to reply that the council could give no relief.
