POVERTY BAY HOUNDS

MEET AT AWAPUNI

FLOOD CAUSES CHANGE Followers of hounds were indeed fortunate in being able to meet again last, week at Awapuni. Originally the hunt was to have taken place at Bushmere, but owing to the recent ! severe flooding and the heavy rain on • Thursday night, a last-minute altera- ■ tion had to be made. The gratitude ' oi' all those connected with the sport goes out to Mrs. Jobson and all the other farmers in that district who ' made their country available at such ; short notice. Hares were difficult to find, and it was some time before hounds were able to send a good strong hare away ' from the karaka trees. Her first efforts at trying to elude hounds, by dodging, running hard back on short lines, and keeping always .to cover, proved unsuccesful, and she was pushed out across the swamp to set a line for 'the grass road. From there a good hunt followed, the hare leading hounds over some good stiff country to cross tlie railway line, and so on to the rough. Hounds were hunting steadily all the way, but in the fern the hare was temporarily able to elude them by doubling hard back, and she was to make towards the woolscour. Hounds had to be lifted and thrown on to the line again where the hare was last viewed, and after another short hunt she was pulled down in the open. This was almost the end of hunting for the day, for although several other draws were made, little sport resulted from them, and it was a thoroughly satisfied field that finally wended its way towards the many cars that were out and a good afternoon tea.
