UNREGISTERED DOGS
TAX COLLECTION PROBLEM MAORI OWNERS LAX The problem of unregistered Maori dogs came before the Hawke's Bay County Council in Napier yesterday, when a discussion arose on the collection of the dog tax. Cr. S. Bennett said there had been more sheep-worrying in the district during the past winter than ever before. He believed most of the trouble was caused by unregistered Maori dogs. There were hundreds of dogs in his district the owners of which had never been asked to register. He thought the council would be better ofT if it went back to the old contract system of collection. Contractors went into every home, and if the nogs were not registered they were destroyed. The chairman, Mr. F. B. Logan, said he thought the number of clogs registered this year compared very favourably with past totals. The council's inspector had been entering pas and had shot a number of clogs. The council decided that a committee consisting of the chairman and Crs. Bennett and C. Lassen should consider the question of the collection of dog tax for next year and report at the next meeting of the council.
