LANDLESS MAORIS
FAR NORTH SETTLEMENT USE OF CROWN AREAS As the Native Department is taking over the Crown lands in North Auckland, beyond Kaitaia, for the purpose of developing*for the settlement of the Maoris in that area, all the Crown grazing leases concerned have been terminated and the settlers affected have moved their stock. The department intends to bring the landless Maoris from Te.Hapua to the area between Ngataki and Te Kao and to settle them on this land. The area will in the first place be developed as a whole by the Maoris under the supervision of the department's officials. Although some of the younger men and women are prepared to move from Te Hapua to a new home, it is said that the older people arc not so ready to leave their present homes, however poor the surrounding land may be for farming purposes, and to settle under the department's scheme on a developed area.
