AUSTRALIAN IMPORTS
PROTECTION FOR DOMINION AUCKLAND DECISION (Special to tlin Herald.) AUCKLAND, this day. “This question of Australian imports is more serious than is evidently realised by the Minister,” said the president of the Auckland Manufacturers’ Association, Mr. F. N. Ambler, at a meeting of the general committee.
Mr. Ambler was referring to reports, regarding the attitude adopted by thej Minister of Industries and Commerce, Hon. D. G. Sullivan, towards Australian imports of woollen goods when the Minister implied he did not favour an extra tariff barrier against Australia.
“As far as we are concerned we don’t care what steps are taken so long as the Government makes some move to protect New Zealand manufacturers,” said Mr. Ambler. Imports from Australia were four times as large as New Zealand’s exports to that country, and the majority of articles imported were virtually the same as those being manufactured by many members of the association. Many of the imported articles were of inferior quality to those manufactured locally.
It was decided to urge the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Association to take action.
