BEACH BEAUTIFICATION
USE OF RAILWAY LAND UNDERTAKING REQUIRED The Gisborne Borough Council last night decided to become a party to an undertaking to raise no objection to the return of its beach property, if given over temporarily to public use, when it was required for railway development. This action followed a deputation to the Minister of Railways, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, when lie was last in Gisborne, requesting the use of the land for beautification purposes. The Thirty Thousand Club wrote asking the council to authorise one of its officers to sign a request to the Minister of Railways for permission to use a portion of the railway reserve, the letter pointing out that the Minister showed sympathy with the proposal, but required an undertaking that no objection would be raised in future if the department required some or all of the land for the development of the railway yards. Cr. G. Bradley Smith: If that is agreed to, will the council have to undertake the maintenance of that piece of land? The dcputy-Mayor, Cr. H. Holmes, said lie understood that the Thirty Thousand Club, the Beach Society and the Beautifying Association would attend to that. * Authority was given for the Mayor and the town clerk to sign the ujidertaking.
