GREY STREET CARRIERS
STAND NOT TO BE MOVED A SUCCESSFUL APPEAL The appeal of the Grey street carriers against the decision of the Gisborne Borough Council to move their stand to the opposite side of the road has been successful.
The Borough Council decided last night to rescind its previous resolution on the matter, and to allow the stand to remain on the opposite side of the road to the carriers’ office. Cr. D. S. Thompson, who moved in this direction, believed it would be a hardship on the carriers to move the stand, and no benefit would be derived by anyone from their moving it. Cr. G. Bradley Smith seconded the motion. The town clerk, Mr. W. M. Jenkins, read the inspector's report, which stated that the two carriers remaining on the stand parked to the rear of the stand and right up to the culvert at the premises of Messrs. Butcher and Meyricl.. This firm had not complained in any way, and resented the comments of the carriers appearing in the press. Cr. P. W. Busline] 1: I don't think that the carriers have made out a good ease. The deputy-Mayor, Cr. If. Holmes: I cannot: understand why Ihe carriers want their stand on the opposite side of the road to their office. If I were in their position I would want space next to my own premises. Cr. Bushnell: It won't hurt anybody to move the stand.
The deputy-Mayor, Cr. 11. Holmes: There is no hardship in their being able to park their lorries in front of their own office. Most business people would like the privilege. It was decided to rescind tlie previous resolution and allow the stand to remain as at present.
