PROVINCIAL STATUS

NORTH AUCKLAND MOVE DISTINCTIVE NAME URGED Representing the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce, Mr. H. W. Crawford addressed the Whangarei County Council on the proposal to form a separate provincial status for the North Auckland territory, which, he said, it was hoped to accomplish to synchronise with the centennial in 1940. “The proposal has been adopted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce in North Auckland and also by a number of individual chambers,” said Mr. Crawford, “and if the various local bodies approve of the proposal, then it is believed something definite will be accomplished.” The council carried the following resolution: —"That this council is unanimously in favour of the adoption of a name for the counties north of the Waitemata County, which will give the area a distinction of its own and establish its identity just as the various provinces of New Zealand have had their identity established by long usage. Furthermore, we urge the Government to establish within the boundaries of this area all State departments not already established here, which will cheapen and quicken for the people all business which they desire to transact with the State.”
