TRADE CO-OPERATION

DOMINION AND AUSTRALIA NEW OFFICES. OPENED MELBOURNE, July 9. Speaking at the opening of the new offices of the New Zealand Government in Melbourne to-day, the Federal Minister for Trade and Customs, Mr. T. W. White, said that if the exported winnings of New Zealand racehorses in Australia were put alongside the merchandise figures, New Zealand would have little cause to seek a further levelling of the trade position. “In the trade between the two countries £67,000 is 'represented by the export to Australia of live horses. ‘Live’ is the correct word,” said Mr. White, “for New Zealand horses are neither slow nor dead.”

Speaking more serioulsy, emphasising the value of co-operation, Mr. White said that trade between New Zealand and Australia was improving every year. The Australian Government always felt that trade between the Dominions should be as free as possible. "Now 93 per cent of New Zealand goods are admitted to Australia duty free,” he continued. “There is a little row about fruit and vegetables, but it is mere nothing and will adjust itself.”

The Victorian Chief Secretary, Mr. H. S. Bailey, said that the visits to New Zealand of three Victorian Ministers were not pleasure jaunts. They had been made with the object of studying New Zealand conditions and copying features which were in advance of methods in Victoria. The New Zealand Trade Commissioner, Mr. Taylor, and the representative at Melbourne, Mr. Malcolm, welcomed many guests.
