SEASON FOR WHITEBAIT
GOOD SUPPLY INDICATED PRICES STILL UNCERTAIN (Special to tin* Herald.) AUCKLAND, this day. Prospects for the whitebait season, which opens to-morrow, are generally fairly bright. The manager of a large Auckland retail firm stated yesterday that good quantities of fish had recently been seen running in the rivers and streams of the Waikato district which provide the main Auckland supply. Given fine weather, better supplies of whitebait than last year are anticipated, but the early catches will probably be affected by the recent heavy rains. No indication of what prices would be ruling could be given by retailers yesterday, although it was thought that, with reasonable supplies, the rates should be lower than those ruling during the early part of the season last year. Early this month exceptionally heavy shoals of whitewait were reported by fishermen in coastal waters of the Bay of Plenty, so that it appears that the early supplies from the Bay of Plenty will be large.
