MURIWAI FLOODING
REQUEST FOR HELP
INSPECTION BY MINISTER
(Herald Correspondent.)
Yesterday morning the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. li. Semple, in the course of his .journey to Wairoa, visited the area between Muriwai and Manutuke. Here he inspected the land adjacent to .Mr. b'obeke's homestead. This area is liable to flooding and representations were made to the .Minister for some assistance.
Ah'. Semple expressed his sympathy with the unfortunate settlers in this area, and gave it as his opinion that the work which had been (lone on the riverbanks liad been started at the wrong end of the river. Mr. 0. (I. Thornton, district engineer, who was present, estimated thai the cost of erecting stop banks would be in the vicinity of £IB,OOO.
.Mr. Semple did not think that, this amount could be expended, but again assured the 10 members of the deputation—settlers from .Manutuke and Muriwai in (he affected area—that the matter would be investigated thoroughly. Be was entirely sympathetic and there must be some solution. It was not right thai these settlers should be isolated during Hood periods.. '•
