UNIONISTS DRIVEN AWAY

DETROIT MOTOR WORKS ORG ANISERS ATTACKED NEW YORK, May 27. An outburst of violence, in which at least a dozen union representatives were kicked, beaten, and driven away, marked the first attempt by the United Automobile \\ orkers to organise the Ford Motor Company’s employees at Detroit.

Richard Frnnkensteen, who was directing a membership drive, and W alter Reuther, president of one of the United Automobile Workers’ unions, were attacked by a group of employees at the gate of’the Rouge plant, where they were directing the distribution of union handbills. The pair were knocked down repeatedly. In subsequent fighting, the employees succeeded in routing all the union party. Seven persons of those injured are said to be women. No one was seriously injured. The United Automobile Workers ol Richmond, California, sponsored a strike and closed the Ford plant. Pickets are barring the. entrance of officials and 18UO employees at Youngstown, Ohio.

STEEL WORKS DISPUTE NEW YORK, May 27. Nearly 86.000 steel workers in live States are faced with idleness as a result of an order to strike, issued by the Committee of Industrial Organisations. The strike order resulted from the corporation's refusal to sign a closedshop contract. Picketing is planned.
