RECORD BID FAILS
LLEWELLYN DELAYED FORGED DOWN NEAR GOAL (Reed. May 28, 11 a.m.) JOHANNESBURG, May 27. With 5 hours 33 minutes in which to cover 800 miles -on the last hop of his flight from London to the Cape in his attempt to establish a record, Flight-Lieutenant D. Llewellyn arrived at Johannesburg, ft is believed that lie delivered Coronation pictures.
He left for Capetown at 9.30 a.m. British standard time. Gulping down a eup of tea as his machine was being refuelled, he said: “I think 1 can just make it.”
He expected to reach Capetown at 2.30 a.m. lie lost two hours through having to make a forced landing 100 miles north of .Johannesburg.
He made another forced landing near Uitenhage, 400 miles from Capetown. He could not then beat Mrs. Amy Johnson’s record, but flew on to Port Elizabeth where lie will spend the night. He then will fly to the Cape to-morrow.
