COOK ANNIVERSARY
WREATHS ON MONUMENT NAVIGATOR lIONOURED INTEREST ED TOURISTS A group of tourists from Itawkes Bay were among the few who witnessed today the laying of wreaths on the Cook Memorial, in honour of the anniversary of the great navigator's first landing on the New Zealand coast.
Representatives of the Navy League., the Women's National Reserve, and the Gishorne Thirty Thousand Club gathered at the foot of the memorial this morning iii weather conditions immeasurably more agreeable than have been vouchsafed for recent anniversary ceremonies. There was no attempt to organise a function, Mrs. \V. Baty placing on the memorial the wreath of the Women's National Reserve, while Miss A. L. Rees performed a similar service on behalf of the Victoria League. Mr. James Chrisp represented the Thirty Thousand Club, and alter the wreaths had been placed in memory of Captain Cook, interested the others present in general discussion on the prospects of beautifying still further the locality.
Each of the two wreaths laid on the memorial had a suitable dedicatory message, that of the Women's National Reserve being: "In memory of the Great Nagivator." while that of the Victoria League read: "In payment of trib'litjo to a great man whose memory should be for ever honoured.
Those who took part, in the gathering noted with satisfaction that the Gikborne Harbour Board had marked the anniversary by a display of bunting, and that many business premises flew their house, or national flags in honour of the occasion.
