HARBOUR FIRE
TANKER DAMAGED RESCUE OF ENGINEER LONDON, Sept, 27. The oil tanker Pass of Leny (/95 tons) was discharging oil into the AngloDuteli Company’s tanks at Poole Harbour, Dorset, when an area of the sea’s surface about 200yds by 10yds burst into flames. The Pass of Lenv’s bows were scorched and the gangway set on fire, Ten small craft were in the burning area, including the motor-cruiser Pomona, whose engineer, Mr. Walter Pander, jumped overboard from the flameswept deck, not aware that the sea also was alight. Mr. George Davis, a ferryman, bravely attempted to rescue him, but the flames engulfed the boat and forced him back, suffering from burns and shock. At length yachtsmen in a dinghy saved Mr. Pander, who was badly burned, and had to be taken lo hospital. The fire on the sea went out in five minutes', after blackening spotless yachts, scorching their masts and shrivelling their rigging. Columns of smoke 100 ft, in height, rose from the fire. Firemen helped to put, out the flames.
