AUSTRALIAN GIFT
NATIONAL ART GALLERY PAINTING OF CANBERRA (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON', this day. In a. letter from Mr. J. A. Lyons. Prime Minister of Australia, to the 18. Hon. M. J. Savage, the former states that- his Government has learned with creat interest, of the establishment of a National Art Gallery, lie and bis colleagues arc desirous of marking the occasion by presention to the gallery a painting which is typical of the Federal capital. The Commonwealth Government desired, as an expression of goodwill and interest, of the .Australian people in the cultural progress and development of New Zealand that the gallery should accept a painting of Canberra. The execution of the painting had been entrusted to Robert Johnson, the wellknown landscape painter, of Sydney, and formerly of New Zealand, who will commence the work almost immediately.
