ESCAPED PRISONER

REFUSED AT GAOL

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day

John William Graves, 31. who escaped from Waikune prison camp on Sunday afternoon surrendered at the Auckland police station last night, and 1 appeared ibis morning before Mr. E. K. Hunt, ,S.M., in the Police Court, charged that, being an incorrigible rogue, ho escaped from a prison camp before the expiration of the term for which he was committed.

Sub-inspector Fox, in asking for a remand to October 10. said Graves walked into the police station at 11.30 p.m. Mr. R. A. Singer, who appeared for Graves, said that he offered himself to ihe Auckland gaol last night, but was refused admission as the place was closed.

Sub-inspector Fox said the police had no intimation that he had gone to the prison. Mr. Singer: It shows his good intentions, anyway. The remand was granted.

When an inquiry was made this aflernoon it was denied officially that Graves was refused admission last night at Auckland prison. It was stated' that the officer on duty at the gale was unable to admit the escapee without calling an officer who had charge of the keys. On returning to the gate he found that Graves had disappeared.
