Tho trees planted to form a jubilee I avenue to mark the 2:5 years of the | late King George's reign caused a division among the "Wairoa .Borough i Council members at Tuesday night's 'meeting. The committee reported: — {'The Wairoa Harbour Board lias replaced the trees that, have died in the avenue tit Whakumahia. that was planted to commemorate the silver jubilee of His lute Majesty King George V, has provided protect ion for the new trees, and has requested the council to pay one-third of the cost, amounting to £lB His !ld. The committee recommends the payment of j this amount.—Or. Galbraith condemned the expenditure, and though the report was adopted he asked that his vote be- recorded against payment. The Mayor, Mr. H. L. Harker, and other councillors defended the expenditure, which was necessary to make up the losses caused by the February storms, which were so severe that even old trees had been destroyed.
Mr. S. Richardson, Greymouth, is visiting YVairoa, Waikaremoana and Morcre. —Feeling reference was made at the Borough Council meeting to the recent deaths of Mrs. W. Clark and Mr. A. Y. Rainbow, and motions of condolence with the relatives were carried in silence. —Miss M. Mcßae, of the clerical staff of Messrs. Swifts (N.Z.), Limited, has returned to Wairoa after a holiday spent in Wellington.—Mr. P. G. Parsons, of Christchurch, is making a tour of the Wairoa and Botorua areas.—Mr. L. Harris, Dunedin, is visiting Morcre.—Mr. P. Winstcin, New Plymouth, is paying a visit to Wairoa.—Mr. J. Benton, Masterton, is on holiday in Wairoa.—Mr. Cyril Baker supplied the music at a social and dance at Tuai, Mr. M. Nissen being. M.C. In a flag five-hundred evening at Tuai, the prizes were won by Messrs. L. Killen. J. Burgis, and K. Keehan, other prizes falling to Mesdames Dawson, Eban, Burgis and Burt. At the Borough Council meeting, the works committee reported:—"The committee lias requested the Bank of New South Wales, if in the event of it building new premises on its property at the corner of Marine parade and Paul street, to have its building designed with a rounded corner, and .has undertaken, if this is done, to attend to The necessary footpath construction, and to endeavour to have the telegraph pole on the corner removed. The bank has replied that when it decided to build? the request will receive favourable consideration."
