GRADUATED LAND TAX

FEARS OF HARDSHIP OTAGO CRITICISM (Por Press Association.) DUNEDIN, last night. “That this council respectfully points out to the Government that the re-imposition of the* graduated land tax will fall very heavily upon many farmers, particularly sheep farmers with freehold runs, and dairy farmers occupying land near a city or where the land is high-priced. Many of these cannot be classed as big farmers and many of those who will lie hit with this tax will pay the tax at the expense of tlioir mortgagees or other creditors. The net result of the tax will be to create much additional hardship to everyone connected with land coming within the not of the tax. ’ ’

This resolution was adopted at the monthly meeting of the Otago provincial council of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union .to-day.
