WOUNDING OF HORSES

TE ARAROA CASE SENTENCE ON MAORI 18 MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT A Maori, Tawliai Waenga, committed from R-uatoria, was sentenced to IB months’ imprisonment by Mr. Justice Reed, acting Chief Justice, in the Supreme Court in Gisborne to-day for mischief committed at Te Araroa. Mr. A. A. Whitehead, for the prisoner, said that the prisoner was only 21 years old. The police report was not very good, and the best that could be said was that he was a hard worker. The prisoner had his mare grazing in a communal paddock, and two others were causing him annoyance. In a fit- of temper, he shot them. At present the prisoner was serving a sentence of three months in the Gisborne gaol for converting a horse to his own use. In that case, lie took possession of a horse which was running on the road. His Honour asked 1 the prisoner if he was dismissed from the employ of a Mr. Hindmarsh for kicking a dog to death.

The prisoner said that was not cor/ect.

His Honour said it appeared that the mares were running with an animal belonging to the prisoner, who found his horse difficult to catch. The prisoner had said that he did not intend to kill, but to wound. The prisoner had apparently allowed his temper to overcome him, and he must be sent somewhere where his temper would be curbed 1 . He was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment with hard labour.
