THE CITY BEAUTIFUL

PROGRESS IN AUSTRALIA PLEASING EFFECTS Street planting and angle-parking oi motor cars, two subjects which have occasioned much controversy in Gisborne from time to time, have been adopted in many places in Australia. A considerable advance has been made in town beautifying in the various States, and today the appearance of many of the towns and cities of the Commonwealth has been greatly enhanced by the planting of flower beds, rockeries and ornamental trees, even in some of the busy thoroughfares. This was noticed by a Gisbornite re cently, particularly in Victoria., where portions of the main thoroughfares of provincial centres have been beautified in tliis way with pleasing effect. The St. Kilda road in Melbourne, carrying a considerable volume of tram and vehicular traffic, affords a striking illustration, and is probably unequalled in Australia. Rows of ornamental trees and palms are enhanced by well-filled garden plots, lending an exceedingly bright and attractive appearance to the thoroughfare. The same may be said of the Dandenong road, whilst' the suburban authorities around the city appear to ha.ve vied with each other in" beautification work. The traffic space in North terrace, Adelaide, was recently restricted to permit of a scheme of parking and flowerbeds in this important thoroughfare of which South Australians are _ justly proud. Similar work is also particularly noticeable in Victoria, where, portions of the main thoroughfares of provincial towns have been devoted to trees, lawns and flower beds with very pleasing results. In regard to the debated subject of of motor cars, the Gisbornite observed that this practice was in vogue in parts of Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and even in the modern Federal capital of Canberra, This method of parking 1 is to be seen even in comparatively narrow streets, but it has not been generally adopted.
