CHASE THROUGH STREETS MAN ESCAPES OVER FENCE The. second case of car conversion in Gisborne in two days occurred on Saturday evening, but on this occasion the police and other searchers were fortunate in sighting the missing car and gave chase. Tlio driver finally deserted the ear and escaped over a fence. In his hurried departure, however, he left a scarf behind.
After returning from the pictures at 10.30 p.m. to collect his car, which he had , parked outside the premises of Mr. E. Hampton, the owner, Mr. B. W. McKenzie, found it missing. He told a friend what had happened and this man immediately reported the matter to the police. Accompanied by a constable the friend set out on a tour of the streets in the hope of seeing the missing ear. The vehicle was sighted in Palmerston road and the searchers accelerated. This had the effect of scaring, the man in front, who set off at high speed down to Derby street' and then turned into Aberdeen road. There was a thrilling chase to Roebuck road and then the fleeing car turned to the right and proceeded across the Roebuck road bridge and into upper Stout street. By this time the pursuers had dropped a little behind and the man in the front car took advantage of this to pull over 'to the side of the road and jump out. He scaled a fence, and, although the constable and two others searched the vicinity for some time, nothing was found but the scarf.
