FUSILLADE AT FUNERAL
THREE PEESONS KILLED TRAGIC MADRID RIOTING CORTES PEARS ATTACK (Elpc. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) ("Reed. April 17, 11.50 a.m.) MADRID, April 16. The city is ablaze with indignation owing to a murderous attack during the funeral of a civil guard ensign who was killed in the recent rioting. A group of youths near the barracks from which the procession started shouted : "Long live Spain!" and gave the Fascist salute, whereupon machine guns and revolvers opened fire on the crowd from windows and rooftops. The civil guards, promptly getting their reversed rifles into action, returned the snipers' fusillade.
Three people were killed and 20 wounded, including Andreas lierdia, a cousin of the Fascist leader, Senor De Rivera. Many persons were arrested. The Socialists, who predominate in Parliament, are popularly regarded as responsible for the outrage, which has resulted in extra guards being posted in the Cortes upon which an attack is feared. The crowds, before and after the shooting, loudly cheered Senor Gil Robles, the Catholic leader and chief mourner.
