ANNUAL MEETING

The Makaraka-Matawhere Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting last week, there being a large attendance of members. After the ode had been sung, the aspirations were read. Several apologies for absence were received ana also greetings from Miss Herbert, who is recuperating in Rotorua. The president, Mrs. Livingston, read her annual report, and also took thi opportunity to thank the secretary. Miss Toole, and her committee, whe had helped her so much during her term.

The secretary’s report showed that the past year had been a successful om in all branches. Although entries in the competitions had brought forth somi excellent work,' the number had beet, disappointing. The trades tables had been well patronised and the foui circles, arts and crafts, cards, garden ing and dramatic, had been operating very successfully. Mrs. H. Lange reported that- tlu gardening circle had a membership oi 20, and 1 a very successful display ol flowers had been held. The arts and crafts circle now had 15 members, and the loss of Mrs. Daniels was going to he felt keenly. Mrs. .Weastall, the treasurer, read the balance sheet, which showed a credit balance. An invitation was extended to the gardening circle from the Ornioml Women’s Institute to attend a flower show to he held- in the Ormond Hall on March 19. Notification was rcceivci of the- Poverty Bay federation’s annual meeting, to bo held in the Parish Hall Gisborne, on May 1. when Mrs. Kelso will be present. Letters from the St John Ambulance and the Y.M.C.A. were discussed. It was agreed to send invitations to the Ngatapa and Wae-renga-a-hika Women’s- Institutes to attend the birthday party next month. The election of officers resulted President, Mrs. A. Lange; secretary, Mrs. Colman; treasurer, Miss J. Smith committee, Mesdames Hunter, [vent. Livingston, Rennie; Chapman and MisToole. Mr. Jonaseri was re-elected auditor. Mrs. A. Lange proposed a vote of thanks to the retiring president, secretary, committee and treasurer, aftei which she- presented suitable tokens of appreciation to Mrs. Livingston, Mrs Weastall, and Miss- Toole, who replied. Mrs. Phil Barry also endorsed the previous speaker’s remarks, and wished the new officers every success in the coming year. Members then joined in singing “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows-.’' and gave three hearty cheers. A special vote of thanks was given to Mrs. Wilcox for donations to tin institute and for her kindness in every way. Mesdames Gordon and Benjamin, who acted as scrutineers for the election, and Mrs. Rennie, for a donation of a cake for the birthday party, also were tendered thanks. The meeting closed with the National Anthem.
