ADRIFT IN A TUB
VENTURESOME YOUTH IN SEARCH OF GOLD MELBOURNE, July 14. A message received from Thursday Island states that Bertie Hjoistrom, a 21-year-old apprentice, deserted the barque G. B. Pedersen and is bobbing about somewhere in Torres Strait in in old wooden bath tub with an improvised sail. He is on his way io Now Guinea —at least it is hoped he is, because when he left on- Wednesday night heavy seas wore coming up and the crew of the C. B. Petersen fear for his safety. Hjeistrom, who had been lured by talcs of gold to be won in New Quinoa, which is 5)0 miles away, took only a small supply of water, food and clothes.
