WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETS (Herald Currespondeiil. ) The monthly meeting of the Tolaga Hay Women’s Institute was held in the Parish Hall, and despite tho adverse weather conditions, there was a good attendance. Owing to the absence of the president, Mrs. Kelly, the chair was taken by Aliss A. L. Aloore. A vote of sympathy was extended to Airs. Kelly on her recent severe illness, and also on the illness of her little daughter, Leigh, who had undergone an operation in a Gisborne hospital. Letters were read from the Poverty •Bay federation, and it was decided that the institute should take part in several of tho competitions. It. was also decided that two teams should be entered in the Drama Festival, the eliminating round being held at Tokoinaru Bay on April 29. , - ■ f Tbe annual meeting takes place in .March, when the committee and officers will )k! elected. Alernbers were reminded that nominations were to be handed to the secretary, Airs. Rennie, not later than March 1, and that nominees had to be agreeable to their being proposed. On behalf of the School Committee, Airs. King asked parents and other friends to do their best to assist the finances of the forthcoming school ball. She pointed out that funds were urgently needed for the many necessities in connection with school activities, and was assured of general assistance. To enable a member to complete a patchwork quilt for competition an appeal was made for scraps, those of a silky texture being particularly required. Miss Moore accompanied community singing for several old favorites, which were enjoyed. An observation test arranged by Mrs. A. Reid was won by Airs. Hurlstone, who remembered 24 of the 30 articles. An estimating competition was won by Airs. Ford Smith, the prize, a basket, being donated by Mrs. Rennie. The competitions resulted: Apple-tart, Airs. Reid; cushion, Airs. F. Lawrence; flowers, Mrs. Cranswick. The tea hostesses were Mesdames McNeil, Nelson, Pickett and Aliss AlcNeil. The singing of the National Anthem brought the meeting to a close.
