BOOKMAKERS’ TAX

The Now South Wales Minister of Labor, Mr Dunningham, recently denied a statement by Mr Lang that the Government had “made a present of £1(10,000 to wealthy bookmakers. Mr Dunninglmm said that there had been no remission of taxation of bookmakers, but an increase of £102,798. In the comparative two-yearlv periods of the successive Governments, they were the only section of the community singled out for added burdens by the Government. The tax on bookmakers’ tickets during 1930-31, when the Lang Government was in power was £75,674, and the same tax in 1931-32, when the same Government was still in office, realised £60,488, a total of During the regime of the present Government the ticket tax, plus turnover tax, amounted to £109,683 in 1932-33, and to £134,277 in 1933-34, a total of £243,960.
