LONDON’S IfEAVX F t QG
MOTOR CARS ABANDONED
(British Official Wireless.)
Rec. 3 p.m. RUGBY, Dec. 23. Tliere was a widespread fog in the central and eastern parts of England yesterday, and in south-eastern counties it persisted to-day. 11l and around London, late last night it became so dense in some suburbs that the speed of road traffic was reduced to a walking pace, arid it was necessary for buses to he led by officials on foot carrying torches. Many motorists, trapped by local fogs, were compelled to, abandon their cars for the night.. The railways suffered relatively little interference, bub the effects of the fog, combined with tfie heavy Christmas traffic congestion, caused delay, on some lines.
Shipping movements, particularly in the Thames estuary, were also severely handicapped, and the. departure of the P. and (). liner Viceroy was held up.
